Naming Celebrations

A naming celebration is a beautiful, non-denominational way to celebrate your new arrival. With no religious connotation and no legalities, Naming Days or Naming Celebrations are simply customised events around welcoming your baby, bestowing blessings, and beginning their lives with a touching ceremony of focused love.

As a non-specific event with no legal attachment, the day is truly yours when deciding what your Naming Celebration will look like. Working from a template, or completely from scratch, let’s weave together an event that welcomes your beautiful new family member to their community.

“A new baby is like the beginning of all things — wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities”

— Eda Leshan

Naming Celebration on the Mornington Peninsula: Where should I begin?

A naming celebration ultimately depends on you and what you’d like it to involve. Here’s a few things to consider when structuring your event:

  • Where would you like to host it? From a private home to a public park, there are plenty of places to choose. What special place can we create for you and your family?

  • As you’ll no doubt be aware, babies and small children don’t always run to plan. Keeping the ceremony to around half an hour is ideal if you need the focus of little ones, then they can get to the fun stuff afterwards, like food and dancing.

  • Will you require input from your family and friends? For example, you might like to have a blessing circle, where each member holds your little one and shares their blessing with the group. Likewise, you might make the blessings private, and have each person write theirs in a book. Whenever active participation is required, it’s best to give participants a heads up, so be sure to mention it beforehand to avoid any sudden stage fright or attack of the blanks!

  • How would you like the day captured? A professional photographer or videographer can be a great inclusion to the day, especially to capture beautiful readings or blessings.

  • Will you have a social part to the event? After the ceremony, you might like to have a picnic, or small cocktail event so friends and family can mingle and celebrate together.

  • Are there any family or cultural traditions you would like to bring to the day? What about heirlooms or gifts? If not, this may just be the perfect day to start a new one that your baby may pass on to their own!
